Shellaine and Brendon Hiles started QLD Food Safety Systems Consulting on 2 March 2015.
Brendon Hiles (QLD Food Safety Specialist) finished his degree in Bachelor of Science (BSc) with microbiology and biochemistry as his major subjects at Rhodes University (Grahamstown, Eastern Cape) in 1998. He started his career in the food industry, specifically in the dairy industry in 1999 and worked in the dairy industry until 2006, gaining experience in laboratory analysis, quality control, laboratory management, product development, basic dairy, sensory evaluation, trials management, ISO 9001 training, HACCP training, internal auditing training and was registered as an assessor for training unit standards through EDTPA SETA (FoodBev SETA). He furthered his career as a food technologist in the bakery and confectionary industry where he implemented hygiene, Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and Prerequisite Program (PRP) standards. He became a HACCP (SANS 10330) coordinator and eventually Quality Manager in the fruit and vegetable processing industry. In 2009 he ventured into auditing, working for the SABS and SGS, where he became a registered lead auditor in ISO 9001, HACCP (SANS 10330), ISO 2000 and FSSC 22000 (including ISO/TS 22002-1 (PAS 220)). His scopes include beverages (alcoholic and non-alcoholic), edible oils, egg production, fruit and vegetables, dairy, nuts, milling, bakery and confectionary, dry ingredients, meat and poultry (including venison), laboratory and with a more than 17 years’ experience in the food industry. Whilst auditing and being approached by clients, he realized there was need for value adding consulting and training in the food industry, as well a need to inform on, educate and communicate food safety and control to the consumer.
Shellaine Hiles (QLD Director) has a Diploma in Marketing and Business Management from Damelin and has worked in sales and marketing in the food, packaging and financial industries, with over 10 years’ experience.
The name QLD is derived from the initials of their 3 Children (Quinn Leri and Djordi) and “Qualidy” was formed from the acronym QLD.
